The City of Lockport is located in Niagara County and is the county seat. The 2010 census had it with a population of 21,165. Within the city is a set of Erie Canal locks. Hence, the derivation of the name – Lockport. It is surrounded by the Town of Lockport and part of the Buffalo- Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.
In April 1816, the New York State Legislature authorized construction of the Erie Canal on a route proposed to traverse an area in central Niagara County, New York. The canal reached Lockport by 1824. However, the locks were not completed until 1825. Lockport had become an established village by 1829 with the locks centered at the community. The City of Lockport was officially incorporated in 1865. In 1918 the Erie Canal was supplanted by the larger New York State Barge Canal, and after the south “flight of five” locks was replaced by two much larger locks, the north “flight of five” lock chambers were established and still remains as a spill way.
The Town of Lockport surrounds the City of Lockport and was established in 1824, the year the Erie Canal was completed up to the City of Lockport. Population in the Town of Lockport was 20,529 at the 2010 census.
