Of great importance for location. the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, the principal airport of Erie County, is located there.  As a matter of history, this town was named the “Land of the Crabapples”, named by the Seneca Native Americans referring to the apple-like fruit of the Hawthorn trees that grow so abundantly in the area.  Cheektowaga was formed from Amherst on March 20, 1829.  Originally, it was a rural farming area, but extensively developed during the post-World War II subdivision boom of the 1950s.  The Westinghouse Electric Corporation plant (since demolished) generated employment in the area for many decades.  Presently, the town continues to maintain a strong blue-collar presence. The 2010 census lists a population of 88,226.

It is proud to boast the prestigious mall, the Walden Galleria Mall, the largest mall in the Buffalo Niagara region. Towns bordering Cheektowaga, offer a myriad of opportunities for shopping, entertainment and education. In addition, it offers easy access to all of the major New York State Thruways and highways across the state.

Education 

Cheektowaga enjoys a fine reputation for its school districts and offers a wealth of opportunity for those who desire higher education in colleges and universities. Adjacent Town of Amherst  has four colleges and universities: north campus of State University of New York at Buffalo, north campus of Erie Community College, Amherst campus of Meadille College, Daemen College and Bryant & Stratton Business Institute. Located in Cheektowaga is Villa Maria College and Empire State College.

Recreation and Entertainment

Recreation and entertainment, and excellent dining abound in this location. Cheektowaga’s real claim to fame is that of being the home of the Buffalo Bills Football Team and the Buffalo Sabres Hockey Team. Many opportunities exist for youth to pursue activities related to sports with many organized youth sports leagues.

For those interested in additional entertainment such as cultural interests, there is the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Museums, art and cultural events, even the very popular Artpark Theatre on the banks of the Niagara River in Lewiston, New York.
